At a GlanceThis week, the Big 12 has a more typical BCS non-conference schedule. In other words, most all of the Big 12 teams have weaker opponents that should not pose much of a challenge this week. The only game that should stay close enough to be interesting is the rivalry game between Iowa and Iowa State. Game of the WeekIowa at Iowa State Saturday, Sept. 12th (12:00 EST) With Iowa’s preseason ranking, it would have looked like this should be an easy game for Iowa. Of course, that was before the Hawkeyes barely squeaked by their much smaller, typically less competitive in state rival Northern Iowa. Iowa has been plagued by injuries, having already lost their 1st string running back Jewel Hampton for the season. After losing the true “jewel” of the offense, they better find a diamond in the turf to get things going. In addition, their starting left tackle Bryan Bulaga will be out for this week’s game and it is uncertain if two other starting linemen will be able to play this week that were out the last game. |

Alas, college football is finally back and the Big 12 gets off to an exciting start this week. For once, unlike most BCS conferences, there are multiple week 1 games in the Big 12 that should be interesting. Between rivalries and the nationally ranked opponents on tap, the Big 12 should start out with some challenges, but fair very well in the end. Game of the Week #13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State Saturday, September 5th (3:30 EST, ABC)
WR Dez Bryant; AP, walterfootball.com While Louisiana Monroe may not exactly give Texas a run for their money, the Oklahoma State-Georgia Bulldog match up may be the most interesting game in the country this week. Seeing a high powered Big 12 offense take on a smash mouth SEC defense is always entertaining. In the end, OSU will simply score too many points for Georgia to keep up. After losing Stafford and Moreno to the NFL, Georgia’s offense will be a huge question mark this year (especially early in the season). Georgia’s defense might slow OSU down a bit, but in the end, the combo of Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant will dominate Georgia’s mediocre secondary. Bryant will finally get the attention he deserves this year. After all, he is the NCAA’s greatest wide receiver and is definitely the player to watch this week.
My pick: Oklahoma State |
