Alas, college football is finally back and the Big 12 gets off to an exciting start this week. For once, unlike most BCS conferences, there are multiple week 1 games in the Big 12 that should be interesting. Between rivalries and the nationally ranked opponents on tap, the Big 12 should start out with some challenges, but fair very well in the end.

Game of the Week

#13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State  Saturday, September 5th (3:30 EST, ABC)

While Louisiana Monroe may not exactly give Texas a run for their money, the Oklahoma State-Georgia Bulldog match up may be the most interesting game in the country this week. Seeing a high powered Big 12 offense take on a smash mouth SEC defense is always entertaining. In the end, OSU will simply score too many points for Georgia to keep up. After losing Stafford and Moreno to the NFL, Georgia’s offense will be a huge question mark this year (especially early in the season). Georgia’s defense might slow OSU down a bit, but in the end, the combo of Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant will dominate Georgia’s mediocre secondary. Bryant will finally get the attention he deserves this year. After all, he is the NCAA’s greatest wide receiver and is definitely the player to watch this week.

My pick: Oklahoma State

The second most discussed Big 12 game this week is Oklahoma and BYU. The first half will be close, but BYU’s weak defense will crumble early in the second half, leading to a blowout by the Sooners. If the game were in Utah, it might be closer, but the Sooners have not lost at home in the last three seasons. They won’t start this year with a loss there either.

Cramming for Saturday

The real tests for the Big 12 this week will be Missouri against Illinois, Baylor versus Wake Forest, and Colorado against Colorado State. All three games will stay close and have a huge impact on the seasons of the teams involved. Despite the challenging initial match ups, the Big 12 could very well win every game this week. My prediction is that the Big 12 conference will be 11-1 this week.
